A teenager is dead and a truck driver has been arrested after a fatal incident near Lake Macquarie in NSW last week.

The incident happened at Seahampton about 3am on February 27 when the 17-year-old was lying on the north bound lane of George Booth Drive when the semi-trailer hit him.

The teenager was dragged a short distance along the road, but the driver did not stop.

“The truck driver returned home and later contacted police informing them he believed he may have hit something in the road,” a police statement says.

Police and paramedics rushed to the scene and found the injured teenager, who was taken to hospital where he later died.

A police spokesman says the 69-year-old driver has not been charged, but he was taken to hospital for mandatory blood and urine tests after being arrested.

“The road was closed for six hours while officer’s from the Newcastle Crash Investigation Unit conducted examinations of the scene,” a police statement says.

Police are still investigating why the teenager was on the road prior to the collision and are urging witnesses to contact the Newcastle Crash Investigation Unit on 02 4929 0744 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
