A former Patrick Stevedoring boss has been named the new chairman of the Sydney Ports Corporation, amid Port Botany’s changing fortunes.

NSW Minister for Ports and Waterways Paul McLeay announced Bryan Smith as the new chairman along with two new board directors, John Brogden and Talal Yassine.

"Mr Smith has extensive professional experience in ports management having worked with Patrick Stevedoring company as managing director and with P&O Ports East Asia as regional manager," McLeay says.

He says 2010 will be a "significant year" for Port Botany with the announcement of the successful tender for a third operator at the terminal.

Citing Smith as the right man for the job, McLeay says forecast growth shows the port will get "busier and busier".

"He understands the business and the intricacies of the Corporation and is well placed to guide the organisation into the future," McLeay says.
Smith has served as a director of Sydney Ports Corporation since March 2009.
