SCT begins new freight trials

SCT begins new rail van trials as part of a deal with food manufacturer Heinz

February 12, 2010

New rail van trials between Melbourne and Brisbane have begun as part of an agreement between SCT Logstics and food manufacturer Heinz.

The trial began on February 2 and will be responsible for relocating Heinz stock to its distribution facility north of Brisbane.

Heinz’s distribution manager, Craig Kinzett, says the company is keen to support the trial which is similar to operations on the East West rail corridor.

“It is clear that rail provides a greener form of transport on interstate routes compared to road, not to mention the social sensitivity associated with road trauma,” he says.

“It is an initiative that we support both now and hopefully into the future and the results thus far in relation to price and service levels received through the trial have been encouraging.”

SCT Logistics CEO Geoff Smith says the trial has been successful so far to the point where the operator may be able to provide a competitive alternative to the market.

“Hopefully these trials will initiate the first step in achieving our goal of running regular services on this very important route,” he says.
