Upgrades to current rest stops and the construction of new facilities is on track, the NSW Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) says.

The $16million initiative half funded by the Federal Government involves the construction of six new rest areas and upgrades to 33 existing ones.

The RTA says 11 iinformal road side parking areas on the Newell Highway between Parkes and the Queensland border are also being upgraded, of which five have already been completed.

This includes one site north of Moree and five north of Gilgandra.

A spokesperson for the RTA says rest areas will continue to be a priority in NSW and an application for more funding has been made to the Federal Government.
