No corners cut in Barton upgrade

Multi-million dollar upgrade to dangerous section of the Barton Highway north of the ACT has been completed

February 2, 2010

A multi-million dollar upgrade to a dangerous section of the Barton Highway north of the nation’s capital has been completed.

Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Anthony Albanese says the section, known as Capricorn Corner, is located 28 kilometres north of the ACT.

He says the project realigned the Highway at the dangerous spot to provide a consistent 100km speed zone and sealed the road shoulders to giver drivers clearer lines of sight.

“The Barton Highway is an important link between Canberra and the south west of NSW as well as Victoria, with more than 19,000 vehicles a day expected to be using it by 2025,” Albanese says.

“The Capricorn Corner upgrade is part of the Rudd Labor Government’s $20 million Barton Highway safety package – an investment that will provide a safer road for motorists and truck drivers.”

Albanese says the Government will continue to invest in new upgrades during the year as part of a $11.6 billion investment over the coming years to maintain and improve road and rail infrastructure in NSW.
