A female driver and male passenger have been killed after colliding with a truck in an accident on the Northern Highway near Kilmore north of Melbourne.

The accident occurred at 8:30am today when a northbound truck carrying concrete pipes dropped its load onto a four wheel drive heading in the opposite direction.

The truck driver was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital suffering minor injuries.

Victorian Police say the highway has been closed near the scene of the crash.

Northbound traffic is being diverted by Watson Street onto the Hume Highway and back onto the Northern Highway at Wandong, while southbound traffic is being diverted at the Epping Kilmore Road.

Victoria’s road toll is 17 for the year, down from 22 at the same time last year.
