NT rail track damaged by flooding, services cut

Repairs to begin on rail line damaged by floodwaters between Alice Springs and Tennant Creek

January 11, 2009

Track repairs will begin tomorrow to repair about 100m of rail line damaged by floodwaters between Alice Springs and Tennant Creek.

Ongoing heavy rain over the weekend hampered efforts to deploy equipment to the site, railway operator FreightLink says, but equipment has now been dispatched.

Services are expected to resume this weekend.

"The timeline to complete the repairs will be subject to favourable site conditions and the weather remaining dry," FreightLink says.

Services are still operating between Adelaide and Alice Springs to supply Northern Territory markets. Bulk mineral trains servicing the Bootu Creek manganese mine and the Frances Creek iron ore mine remain unaffected by the closure.
