ARA backs level crossing scheme

Rail lobby backs the Victorian Government's Toward Zero strategy to cut level crossing incidents

November 18, 2009

The Australasian Railway Association (ARA) has thrown its support behind the new Victorian level crossing safety strategy released yesterday by Public Transport Minister Lynne Kosky.

The ARA says the Towards Zero strategy identifies measures to ultimately eliminate all deaths at Victorian railway level crossings and proves Victoria is leading the way in railway safety.

The paper supports boom barriers on all arterial roads by 2018 and 80 km/h speed zones around railway crossings on sealed roads.

"Towards Zero offers proactive measures that will continue to improve Victorian railway level crossing safety and the rail industry fully supports Victoria as it continues to lead the way in this area," ARA Chief Executive Bryan Nye says.

"The rail industry looks forward to working with Victoria to see Towards Zero put into place to achieve improved railway level crossing safety."
