$14 million Hunter Valley upgrade underway

Multi-million dollar project underway to boost coal freight productivity and efficiency in the Hunter Valley region

November 3, 2009

A $14 million project in the Hunter Valley will soon begin to increase coal freight productivity and efficiency.

The Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) will partner with Ansaldo STS to begin the signalling upgrade.

The ARTC says the current route relay interlocking system at Maitland Junction will be replaced with a computer system, while Ansaldo will also install a new crossover.

Once completed, the ARTC says the project will improve system reliability and reduce maintenance requirements for services between Maitland and Branxton.

The upgrade follows the completion of a $31 million installation of bi-directional signalling on the Maitland to Branxton line designed to increase line flexibility and availability.
