Patrick opens ‘world-first’ AutoStrad terminal in Brisbane

Asciano officially opens its $125 million AutoStrad terminal at Fisherman's Island at the Port of Brisbane

Asciano has officially opened its 39 hectare, $125 million AutoStrad terminal at Fisherman’s Island at the Port of Brisbane, which the company claims is a world first.

The terminal uses automated handling equipment, has a quay length of 900 metres and can handle close to 800,000 twenty foot equivalent units.

Autostrads can straddle shipping containers and move them around the container terminal at 27km/h, unmanned.

The technology was designed by Asicano-owned Patrick in conjunction with the University of Sydney.

Asciano Managing Director Mark Rowsthorn says the construction of the terminal underlines the company’s commitment to the Port of Brisbane.

“The terminal has been built to last and has been carefully planned to accommodate expansion as the POB [Port of Brisbane] grows,” Rowsthorn says.

“The Brisbane AutoStrad terminal is far removed from most people’s perceptions of the traditional waterfront. It is a sophisticated, safe and highly efficient environment exhibiting revolutionary technology and a highly skilled workforce.”
