Qantas has switched on a new IT system for its freight business it is describing as a revolution for the air freight sector.

The airline says iCargo is a "next generation, industry-specific information technology application".

According to Qantas Freight Executive Manger Stephen Cleary the company has achieved a "critical milestone" that will allow the business to be adaptable and better able to service the changing needs of freight customers in the 21st century.

"iCargo will be integrated across the QF freight network over a number of phases, with our terminal operations business planned to be the last to cutover late in 2010," says Cleary.

Cleary says Qantas has worked closely with global software vendor IBS throughout the development of the iCargo application.

"Qantas Freight subject matter experts have contributed to the application’s development since the very beginning thereby ensuring that I cargo will suit the needs if our business now and well into the future," he says.
