Melbourne Ports down 10 percent

Imports and exports for Port of Melbourne drop 10 percent

Imports and exports for the Port of Melbourne have fallen10 percent compared with December 2007.

Figures released this morning were confirmed by Port of Melbourne Corporation’s Chief Executive Steven Bradford who says full container levels for December 2008 dropped 8.4 percent on 2007 and were down 5.5 percent for the financial year.

Although referring to the decline as “unusual”, Bradford still expects further downturn in the coming months.

“When you look at total containers including empties, for December we are down by 6.2 percent,” Bradford says.

But despite the figures, he says the port still recorded 184,000 movements in December.
