Minorplanet Asia Pacific has gained Intelligent Access Program (IAP) certification, ending monopolisation of the scheme following Sigtec’s withdrawal in November.

Transport Certification Australia (TCA), which administers IAP, today announced the UK-owned company met the necessary requirements to achieve certification.

It now joins Transtech Driven as an IAP provider, after Sigtec decided to focus on its public transport ventures.

TCA Chief Executive Officer Chris Koniditsiotis congratulated Minor Planet on becoming the latest IAP provider.

"Becoming an IAP service provider requires applicants to meet the due diligence, probity, financial, functional and technical requirements required by TCA under the certification process and it is an achievement to be proud of," Koniditsiotis says.

Minorplanet has been an active supporter of IAP since its inception, calling the monitoring program an effective initiative capable of improving road productivity and safety.

The vehicle management information company was founded in Sydney in 2000 and now has offices in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane, Perth and Auckland.

Under IAP, operators are granted greater route access and the ability to use multi-combination vehicles in return for being monitored to ensure trucks do not stray onto networks incapable of supporting heavy vehicles.

NSW, Queensland and Victoria are currently running a transition phase, which ends on July 1 next year.

After that time operators wanting to use Higher Mass Limits (HML) in Queensland and NSW will need to sign up to IAP.

Although it will not enforce IAP for HML access, Victoria has linked the program to mobile cranes and pump trucks.

TCA hopes to have in place a competitive market when the transition phase ends to give operators a choice of IAP providers.
