Western Ring Road should be completed and East West Link built in line with Eddington report, Infrastructure Partnerships Australia says

The Western Ring Road should be completed and the East West Link built as-per the Eddington report, Infrastructure Partnerships Australia’s Brendan Lyon says.

Speaking from Canberra this morning, the Executive Director confirmed the "national peak infrastructure body" had been in talks with the Brumby Government for some time over the Victorian Transport Plan.

And he says the plan will be released in the first week of December.

"It was originally going to be towards the end of this month but as far as I understand it will now be in the first week of December," Lyon says.

He says urban congestion costs Victoria $3 billion annually, which will double by 2015 unless it is addressed.

"Urban congestion in Melbourne is a real cost and it needs a real solution. They need to be looking at Eddington’s East West study and they need to be giving it real consideration and by looking at the completion of the missing link of the metropolitan ring road," Lyon says.

Infrastructure Partnerships Australia will not rule out Hastings as a future port as a "long term solution", but Lyon says the Port of Melbourne will continue to the key port in the short to medium term.

"There is no doubt that long term there will be a need for an additional but in the short to medium term it would be a misappropriation of money," he says.
