Work will soon begin on a multi-million dollar project to cut congestion and meet the future demands on South Australia’s north-south arterial network.
Expressions of Interest have been called for an outside consultant to undertake the necessary planning and feasibility work on the Darlington Transport Project.
Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Anthony Albanese says the project is part of the Rudd Government’s commitment to develop the first stage of a non-stop motorway from the Southern Expressway to the Port River Expressway.
The study will also examine the feasibility of upgrading and extending road and public transport facilities along Adelaide’s north-south transport corridor at Darlington.
“This is a key component of Adelaide’s north-south corridor stretching from the Southern Expressway to the Port River Expressway,” Albanese says.
“By starting this critical planning work now, we will be in a position to start delivering on our $500 million commitment to upgrade South Road.”
Albanese says the study will also plan improvements to intersections at South and Sturt roads and is part of the Government’s election promise to reduce congestion levels.
South Australian Minister for Transport Patrick Conlon says the Darlington Transport Project is a crucial initiative and will meet future demands on Adelaide’s north-south arterial road network.
Conlon says upgrading the section will go towards creating a non-stop north-south corridor with the Anzac highway underpass and the South Road tram overpass.
The study team will also investigate the feasibility of a Tonsley passenger rail line extension to the Flinders Medical Centre as part of an effort to improve public transport facilities to reduce urban congestion.
