Fox wants new port as part of transport plan

Victoria desperately needs a deep water dock and Hastings is the perfect location, trucking magnate Lindsay Fox claims

Victoria desperately needs a deep water dock outside the city centre and Hastings is the perfect location, trucking magnate Lindsay Fox claims.

In a rare public interview in Melbourne last week, Fox laid out his own theory on what needs to be done to manage Victoria’s freight task.

“Victoria in the long run, to compete, must have a deep water port and the nearest deep water port is in Hastings,” Fox says.

“Our transport plan still revolves around the docks being in the centre of the city. In 1960s in the United Kingdom they moved the docks from the Thames River to Tilbury in South Hampton.”

Fox says the 6000 daily truck movements through the city and congestion on the Westgate Bridge and out to both bays will be cut if Hasting is used.

He says freight backing onto the ocean will have a negative impact on distribution.
