We have 'got it right' on fatigue management: NTC
NTC boss says governments and industry associations should be commended for their role in fatigue management laws
The National Transport Commission (NTC) has welcomed fatigue management laws, claiming those involved in the new compliance measures have "got it right".Despite the states’ refusal to implement national regulations, NTC Chief Executive Nick Dimopoulos says governments have shown leadership on fatigue management and should be commended for making the laws a reality.
Furthermore, Dimopoulos says government agencies have done "a good job" in educating the industry about fatigue management laws even though there were reports of stakeholders leaving information sessions fed up because government representatives were unable to answer basic questions.
"Australia’s transport ministers showed strong leadership in approving this reform, which will deliver significant safety benefits for heavy vehicle drivers and the community," Dimopoulos says.
Dimopoulos has also heaped praise on industry associations and unions, saying fatigue management laws would not have been possible without their support.
"Their proactive approach to the development of this national reform has been crucial in ensuring we got it right," Dimopoulos says.
According to Dimopoulos, fatigue management will reduce the risk of heavy vehicle crashes by ensuring drivers are healthier and better rested.
He says the laws target the root cause of fatigue by holding the supply chain accountable rather than simply regulating hours
The laws have taken effect in Queensland, NSW, Victoria and South Australia.
