Tenders called for major SA road freight upgrade

Tenders called to undertake planning study into multi-million dollar road upgrade to accomodate growing freight task

Tenders are being called for a planning study into a multi-million dollar road upgrade in South Australia to accommodate the growing road freight task.

The study will look at upgrading South Road and the Grand Junction Road to the Port River Expressway.

Federal Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Anthony Albanese says the upgrade is a significant initiative which will meet future road freight and passenger vehicle demands.

The Federal Government has committed $12.6 million to the upgrade, which South Australian Minister for Transport Patrick Conlon says is vital to the State’s road transport system.

"This link provides connections to the major intermodal transport hubs of Adelaide Airport, Port Adelaide, Outer Harbor and the Islington Rail Terminal," Conlon says.

He says the upgrade will also provide access to most of Adelaide’s industry activity in the north-west section.

"An efficient non stop north-south corridor is crucial for freight and the economy," Conlon says.

Albanese says the upgrade will create a 2km corridor that will run along the existing South Road alignment, which will improve road safety and reduce stop-start travel.

The tendering process will involve planning and environmental impact assessments, community consultation and concept designs.

The upgrade is part of a Federal Government investment which will total $500 million between now and 2014.

The money will be spent on flyovers at major bottlenecks at Grand Junction Road, Cormack Road and the Wingfield railway line and Sturt Road.

Of the $500 million, $70 million will be spent planning for a traffic light-free road all the way from the Southern Expressway to the Port River Expressway.
