A new transport hub serving southern Tasmania will be built at Brighton Industrial Estate.
The State Government has announced its preferred site for the new hub, to the west of the existing Brighton Industrial Estate.
The 50-hectare site has provision for warehousing adjoining an intermodal terminal and additional land for freight-related commercial development.
Minister for Infrastructure Graeme Sturges says the freight terminal and distribution hub will improve the efficiency of freight movement into and out of southern Tasmania.
Brighton Mayor Tony Foster says it has been the vision of the Brighton Council for many years to see the region become the transport hub for southern Tasmania.
“It is an obvious place to build these facilities with excellent access to all regions,” he says.
“I see the transport hub as a critical part of the future development of the Brighton Municipality. It should provide much-needed job opportunities for residents.
“It will provide increased prosperity and growth with the associated facilities and services that will accompany the hub development. I believe it will consolidate Brighton as a regional centre.
Planning approvals for site development should be completed by early 2009 with construction of the hub due to start in the first half of 2009.
Meanwhile, Woolworths has announced it will build a new $106 million distribution centre in Launceston promising to “revolutionise” the food supply chain in Tasmania.
The retailer says the 60,000 square metre development proposed by Statewide Independent Wholesalers (SIW) – a partnership of Tasmanian Independent Retailers and Woolworths – was in response to strong growth in consumer spending that had stretched the food supply network to capacity.
