Companies to tender for Newcastle Port upgrade

NSW Government shortlists three companies to construct wharf facilities at Newcastle Port.

The New South Wales has shortlisted three companies to construct wharf facilities at Newcastle Port.

Abigroup, BMD Constructions and Daracon Group will now tender to build Mayfield No. 4 berth, upgrading a former BHP ore berth and constructing hardstand for cargo handling, storage and assembly.

The companies have until September 18 to submit their tenders, with the winning company selected late next year. Construction will begin immediately aftrer.

State Ports Minister Joe Tripodi says the Mayfield site has significant potential for a range of port, freight, general industrial and commercial uses.

“The NSW Government has identified the Port of Newcastle as the next major container port once Port Botany reaches capacity and the former BHP steelworks land is the strategic site for that growth,” he says.

“About 35 hectares of the Mayfield site is for a future container terminal and this is an important part of the future diversification of the port.”
