The long awaited sale of ST Group’s transport assets took place today, with auction prices for many items exceeding the goals of ST Group managing director Brad Skelton.

Chief among the more than 200 lots offered by ST Group were there heavy cranes, including a pair of 100-tonne units, a 120-tonne and multiple 50-tonne cranes, all of which were expected to sell above their retail prices.

At the close of selling on Tuesday, both 100-tonne cranes had new owners, attracting $1.4 million each, while the 120-tonne unit also fetched over the $1million mark.

A company spokesperson says the 50-tonne cranes all realised around $500,000 each, as did some Franna cranes offered during the sale.

“The cranes went exceptionally well, and some even achieved better than their new price,” the spokesperson says.

The sale also included the full heavy haulage fleet of ST Group, both prime movers and a wide range of trailers, which were also expected to do well come sale day.

Skelton says a variety of factors combined to encourage him to sell off the transport arm, including fuel prices and the shortage of skilled labour.

Speaking during the auctions Skelton praised his staff, as well as auctioneers Ritchie Brothers, for their efforts in preparing for the sale.

“Both the team at Ritchie Brothers and our own team have worked exceptionally hard to get to this point, and today proved to be a great outcome for those efforts,” he says.

“I am extremely satisfied with the results of the two days sales.”

While no specific prices were available for the truck and trailer sales, the ST Group spokesperson says the company received ‘exceptionally good prices’, and says they re ‘happy with the result’.

With the sale including a large number of in-demand equipment such as floats, the spokesperson says some of the prices reflected the high level of demand in the marketplace.
