The Queensland Government is to launch a review into the structure of port operations in an effort to increase private investment.

As part of the Budget handed down by Treasurer Andrew Fraser, the Government is to look at ways of improving the management framework of the State’s seaports, which will be undertaken in conjunction with the sale of the Cairns and Mackay airports.

The Government says it is not intending privatise the ports, saying the review will be premised on the State maintaining ownership while encouraging private sector investment in port infrastructure and services.

“This review is focused on options for the management of the network and is not specifically focused on discrete roles or functions of individual port authorities,” according to the Budget papers.

“The principle focus of this review is on the management of the port network from Hay Point onwards.”

The Government expects the review to find the seaport continues to assist in maximising economic growth and regional development while maintaining strong commercial returns, in turn providing “a financially and operationally safe and secure seaport network”.
