National Transport Commission (NTC) Chairman Michael Deegan has been appointed the inaugural Infrastructure Coordinator.

Deegan, who will take up the position on July 1, is charged with overseeing the day-to-day operations of Infrastructure Australia and working closely with the twelve-member board, which is led by Sir Rod Eddington.

Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Anthony Albanese says Deegan brings to the job a wealth of experience across infrastructure sectors as a result of his roles in both the public and private domain.

Prior to joing the NTC, Deegan worked in a number of positions including as the director general the NSW Department of Transport, the assistant secretary of the Commonwealth Deputy of Administrative Services and the secretary of the Victorian Department of Premier and Cabinet.

He has also been the director of various construction and investment companies as well as the president of the Property Council of Australia.

“Mr Deegan will make an outstanding contribution to the Government’s nation building agenda and I thank him for accepting this important position,” Albanese says.

“Mr Deegan will be responsible for managing a small team of professionals to ensure that Infrastructure Australia is provided with the highest standard of support and advice on a wide range of policy and regulatory issues.”

Deegan’s appointment has received widespread support from industry groups such as the Australian Logistics Council (ALC) and the Australian Industry Group.

ALC Chief Executive Hal Morris says Deegan’s appointment is an important step towards achieving long-standing reforms in the transport and logistics industry.

“We know from our work together that Mr Deegan has been an important advocate of the regulatory reforms and infrastructure improvements that are so vital for the smooth running of our domestic and international supply chains,” Morris says.

Chief Executive of Australian Industry Group Heather Ridout says Deegan’s experience in working in public and private sectors means he is an ideal candidate for the position.

“I look forward to working with him,” Ridout says.
