The Queensland Government expects a realignment upgrade of a section of the Bruce Highway to be completed four months ahead of schedule.
Minister for Main Roads Warren Pitt made the announcement today after inspecting the $28 million upgrade.
The works, carried out between Tokalon and Lannercost Street, are being funded by the Federal Government. Included in the upgrade is 2km of new highway realignment and 1km of reconstruction of the existing highway.
“Main Roads has provided me with an update on the project today and has advised that a completion date of September this year, months ahead of the original schedule, is possible,” Pitt says.
According to Pitt, the realignment will reduce the severity and frequency of flooding closures down to an annual average closure time of less than 10 hours during the wet season.
“The benefits of this type of upgrade were evident in Tully during heavy rains in March this year,” he says.
Pitt says the upgrade will also improve safety, as the construction includes four new service roads to provide better access for local business and residents.
Furthermore, sheltered turning lanes and a centre right-turn lane have been installed on selected sections of road to enable through traffic to safely pass turning vehicles.
