Volvo Trucks and Minter Ellison Lawyers have thrown their support behind the inaugural Safety Summit to be held at this year’s Australian Trucking Convention.

The Australian Trucking Association (ATA) has welcomed Volvo’s announcement it will sponsor the summit.

A spokesman for Volvo says it is only natural for the company to support the summit because the Volvo brand is synonymous with safety.

In continuing the safety theme, Michael Connolly from Minter Ellison will address the summit with a focus on occupational health and safety (OH&S) law.

Australian Trucking Association (ATA) Chief Executive Stuart St Clair says Connolly’s extensive experience in the OH&S field, saying it will help delegates understand how accidents are investigated and prosecuted when they occur.

"Michael advises numerous clients in high risk industries, including transport and trucking and is attuned to the key risk areas and changing legislation that will affect the industry," St Clair says.

Connolly’s involvement adds to the list of impressive speakers already announced, which includes industry stalwart Lindsay Fox.

The Safety Summit will focus on how the industry can change the culture of regulators, the supply chain and the industry so safety becomes part of doing business for everyone.

St Clair says the running theme of the summit is "safety is good business" because trucking companies with a strong safety culture are successful.

The summit will be held as part of the Australian Trucking Convention which will run from May 27 to 30.

The Mobile Education Centre will also be launched at the convention, which will travel to schools, shows and field days across the country to educate people about careers in the trucking industry as well as road safety issues.
