National freight management company Northline will run an express service from Darwin to Broome as part of its multi-million dollar investment in the booming Kimberley region.

Long-haul operator Northline, which also deals with rail container transport and warehousing, will use its recently opened freight distribution centre at Darwin to run two-day trips between Darwin and Broome.

The move will slash the cost and time of deliveries as the company up until this week ran its long-haul service to Broome out of Perth.

Northline will run the 3700km trip once a week, leaving Darwin on Friday for a Monday delivery and Broome on Tuesday for a Thursday delivery.

However, the company is banking on this changing with Northline’s chief operating officer Phillip Taylor saying the service will increase in line with demand, which is expected to keep growing as companies invest in mining, oil and gas explorations.

"The whole area is booming, so we believe it makes a lot of sense to deliver general freight, including building materials, from Darwin rather than Perth," he says.

The distribution centre cost Northline $4 million, and it is hoping the move will pay off.
"In the past, people in the Kimbreely region have looked at Perth, or the east coast via Perth, for suppliers," Taylor says.

"We are the only freight company providing a single-haul service from Darwin to Broome so we believe that sets us apart in terms of customer service."

Northline has dedicated four new staff to run the service – two at Broome and two at Darwin – but expects to add more throughout the year.
"Given there is so much mining, oil and gas explorations on the books, the area needs support to supply demand in terms of transport and logistics," Taylor says.

The new route will complement the company’s existing services, which include long-haul services from Darwin to Perth, to Adelaide, to northern Queensland and to the south east of Australia.
