Rail operator El Zorro will step up its services in Victoria by expanding its operations to include grain.

The move has been welcomed by the Alliance of Councils for Rail Freight Development, with Chairman Vernon Knight saying the 23 local councils that make up the alliance are pleased the Williamstown-based operator is taking an active role in resolving Victoria’s rail freight issues.

Knight says El Zorro’s commitment to increase its services will reduce the need for more road traffic as well as assist grain farmers who were left in limbo by Pacific National after it announced it was ending its grain and general freight services.

"El Zorro’s plans to expand Victoria’s rail freight network brings optimism for the future and gives hope to hose involved in freight-related services," Knight says.

"This solution would help alleviate concerns about grain being transported by road, which could potentially add an additional 200,000 long-haul truck movements to Victorian roads and cause a disastrous ripple effect throughout our towns."

El Zorro has already won contracts from Pacific National, such as a deal to carry freight between Warrnambool and Melbourne, as well as contract to provide two trains to AWB.

Knight says the alliance is continuing to monitor the rail freight situation, and will continue to call for greater investment by private sector and the Government in the rail network.
