The Australian Trucking Association (ATA) in conjunction with Goodyear is calling for nominations for the Goodyear Highway Heroes Award.

Goodyear Highway Heroes is an initiative that rewards Australia’s bus, coach and truck drivers for acts of bravery, heroism and driver skill in contributing to improved safety on Australia’s roads and highways.

ATA Chief Executive Stuart St Clair says the many highly professional, highly skilled and community minded individuals in our industry who have performed exceptionally brave acts deserve recognition.

"The Highway Heroes Award is an opportunity to recognise the efforts of drivers who go above and beyond the call of duty to offer assistance to other road users," he says.

Those nominated will be assessed according to a set of criteria, which states those who win must be employed full-time and reside in Australia.

Furthermore, to be eligible for nomination, the incident must have occurred in Australia and nominees must have been doing their job, and in their rig, at the time of the incident which is the subject of the nomination.

This year’s winner will be invited to attend the Australian Trucking Convention where he or she will be presented with the Goodyear Highway Hero award. Prizes include a trophy and $5000 cash.

The convention will include sessions and speakers focusing on how the industry can be fully prepared for the significant environmental, regulatory and safety reforms that are set to be implemented in the coming year.

"This award is a great initiative from Goodyear and a clear demonstration of their long-term commitment to safety and professionalism in the trucking industry," Mr St Clair said.

Nominations close on 9th May 2008. Those wanting a nomination form can visit the ATA events website at www.ataevents.net.au
