EDITORIAL: If the price is right, customers must foot the bill

The fight appears lost. There's an inevitability that Friday's meeting of state and federal transport ministers will slug the trucking industry millions of dollars in higher registration fees and fuel excise.

There is simply not the political climate to see the National Transport Commission's (NTC) proposals defeated. Instead, the fight must turn to a new front.

The trucking industry has mounted the claim the increases in trucking costs will fuel already overheating inflation. The charges must be passed on to customers, and ultimately the end consumers, pushing up the price of goods on the shelf.

Governments could live to rue their decision to impose the increases.

But the trucking industry can't be worried about the macro economic climate. Its job is to remain competitive and productive. To do this it must pass on the costs.

Some operators face significant registration increases in a matter of months. The education campaign with their customers must start now.
