State and federal governments have announced the release of disaster recovery grants in the wake of the damage caused by ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred.
Through the Disaster Recovery Allowance, eligible workers can access up to 13 weeks of income support if they can prove they have suffered a loss of income as a direct result of the event,
Those living in a total of 31 local government areas across Queensland and New South Wales are eligible to apply for the funding, with 14 of the LGAs located in Queensland and 17 in New South Wales. A full list is available here.
People are advised to head to the Services Australia website and apply for funding through myGov.
At the worst of times, we see the best of Australian character,” Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says. “That’s exactly what we’ve seen in the past week in Queensland and NSW.
“My message to these communities in this difficult time is we’ve got your back and will support you through the recovery.”
Despite dropping from a cyclone to a ‘tropical low’ by the time it made landfall over south-east Queensland on Saturday evening, the storm has caused some of the most extensive power outages in the region’s history.
Over 230,000 homes and businesses were left without power in the wake of the storm, while businesses across the region were forced to shut up shop and brace for impact.
As flood conditions continue to impact the affected regions, motorists have been advised to avoid driving through floodwaters.

Those applying for funding have until September 8, 2025 to submit their applications.
