IAP ‘levels the playing field’, crane boss claims

Gillespies Cranes boss lends support to controversial tracking tool, claiming it "levels the playing field" in the crane industry

August 10, 2012

The boss of family-owned crane operator Gillespies Cranes has lent support to the Intelligent Access Program (IAP), claiming it ensures companies are competing fairly.

New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria require mobile cranes that exceed mass limits, are wider than 2.5 metres and have a forward projection of more than 5.5 metres to be monitored under IAP to gain road access.

The compliance tool is also necessary for trucking companies wanting to operate under higher mass limits (HML) in Queensland, NSW and South Australia.

“Applying the IAP on high risk mobile cranes levels the playing field across the NSW crane industry,” Gillespies Cranes Managing Director John Gillespie says.

“That’s because operators of mobile cranes are now required to operate under the same set of rules through the use of certified telematics to manage access to the road network.”

Transport Certification Australia CEO Chris Koniditsiotis says the IAP gives the community, industry and regulators assurance road access conditions are being complied with.

“The NSW crane industry provides a useful example for other industry sectors to emulate,” he says.
