Global zero-emissions heavy vehicle supplier Hyzon Motors has announced that it has delivered four fuel-cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) to food distributor and supplier Performance Food Group (PFG).

In an event held at PFG’s Vistar facility in Fontana, USA, Hyzon presented the models in front of government leaders, company leaders and PFG associates.

Hyzon CEO Parker Meeks says that delivering the zero-emissions trucks marks “an important step toward decarbonisation goals shared by PFG, Hyzon and the state of California”.

“Our fuel-cell technology will help Vistar’s heavy-duty trucking operations work emissions free with reduced noise pollution,” Meeks says.

“We’re deeply grateful for our partnership with PFG, as it helps to further our collective goals to reduce carbon emissions from heavy-duty trucking.”

Meeks says the deployment of the fuel-cell electric vehicles is a major milestone for Hyzon, as the partnership will allow the company to gain valuable insight through real-world operations.

The delivery comes as Hyzon continues working to simultaneously develop the next generation 200kW fuel cell system.

The Hyzon trucks have an expected travel range of up to 350 miles (563 kilometres) and can be refuelled in 15 minutes with fast fill dispensing.

The trucks are planned to deliver snacks, candy and beverages to PFG customers after being fuelled with hydrogen courtesy of Pilot Travel Centers LLC, a fuel and energy provider throughout North America.

The delivery comes six months after Hyzon and PFG announced their initial fuel-cell electric vehicle agreement.

“Food distribution is an essential service and critical to the companies and communities we serve,” PFG operations senior vice president Jeff Williamson says.

“As we look towards the future, it’s important for us to work towards sustainability goals and improve our transportation infrastructure.

“At PFG, we remain dedicated to reducing our environmental footprint and serving the Southern California region responsibly. We’re excited to have partners like Hyzon as we continue to demonstrate our commitment to being a good neighbour to every community we serve.”

Following the delivery of these vehicles, Hyzon and PFG intend to work together on a deal for 15 200kW vehicles, with an option available for an extra 30 FCEVs to be delivered.
