Details emerge about Hyundai's foray into the truck market to take the fight to Isuzu, Hino and Fuso

Although details of the final Australian specification are not yet finalised, Hyundai says it will launch the first three models of its truck range before the end of 2010.
Initially three models will come to Australia – the HD45, HD65 and HD75. They will compete in the 4.5, 6.5 and 7.5-tonne segments respectively, taking the fight to market leaders Isuzu, Hino and Fuso.
Power for the three trucks will come from a 110kW 3.9-litre turbo-diesel offering 549Nm of torque, which puts it squarely in the middle of what is a very competitive field.
With planning still underway ahead of the launch, the spokesman says the company is still appointing dealers which are understood to be separate from the existing passenger car network.
While the company will operate separately from the passenger car division, the spokesman says the two organisations will use the existing spare parts and after sales network.
While pricing is still a closely guarded secret, the price advantage Hyundai enjoys in the passenger market means the new trucks may come in at a slightly lower price point than the equivalent Japanese truck, potentially creating a price war with its opponents.
The impending introduction of Hyundai—as well as Western Star Australia’s confirmation it will launch Chinese brand Foton locally before 2011— underscores the perceived strength of the Australian market, particularly in the lower weight segments.
This strength has seen sales rebound strongly. Although not quite at 2007 levels they are certainly not far away and could yet achieve record levels again by the end of 2011.
ATN will advise the final specification when details are confirmed by Hyundai.
