Melbourne council says initial response to its proposal for a truck ban has been “positive”.
The Melbourne council pushing for restrictions on trucks in its municipality is confident it will get its way.
Hobsons Bay Council has asked Victoria’s road authority, VicRoads, to ban trucks from travelling on Station Road in Williamstown North.
Almost 400 heavy vehicles use the road each day.
Mayor Sandra Wilson says the council lodged an application with VicRoads earlier this year.
“The initial response has been positive but we are awaiting further details as the approval may be subject to conditions,” Wilson says.
The council lodged the application in response to residents’ concerns and following investigations it carried out.
“There is a nearby arterial network including Melbourne Road better suited to carrying heavy vehicles than a residential street such as Station Road,” Wilson says.
If approved, the restriction will not apply to local delivery and waste disposal trucks that require access for operation purposes, VicRoads says.
