The Alice Springs Road Transport Historical Society will hold a lunchtime barbecue and awards ceremony to celebrate TruckWeek.

The group’s annual truckies’ reunion, which is held at the National Road Transport Hall of Fame from August 23 to 26, will hold the barbecue on August 26, with the awards ceremony recognising local operators who provide exceptional service to their community.

The event will also celebrate 17 years of the National Road Transport Hall of Fame. Its CEO, Liz Martin OAM, says TruckWeek and the reunion are great opportunities to recognise the importance of trucking to outback Australia.

“I think that people need to understand that trucking, particularly in the outback, is our lifeblood. Literally everything we use comes to us courtesy of the road transport industry,” Martin says.

The Australian Trucking Association (ATA) is the organiser of TruckWeek and says the event celebrates the industry, its achievements and those who work in it.

“I urge every trucking business to use this opportunity to approach their local community and to recognise the safe, dedicated and professional operators and employees in our industry,” ATA CEO Stuart St Clair says.

TruckWeek will run from August 19 to 25, and the ATA has suggested operators take part through events such as barbecues, an awards ceremony, hosting a politician and visiting a local school.

The New South Wales branch of the ATA last month announced it would join with the Sydney Ports Corporation, rt health fund and Patrick Stevedores to stage a barbecue at Port Botany for four days from August 20 to 24.

The ATA and Sydney Ports plan to use the event to listen to what truck drivers have to say about port facilities and other issues.
