Western Australian transport company Marley’s Transport has taken the delivery of its first ever electric truck – a Volvo FM Electric delivered by Truck Centre WA.

Marley’s has been operating in Western Australia since 1969 and specialises in the transport of bulk agricultural commodities including grain, fertiliser, gypsum and lime, as well as livestock and pelletised feed.

The company is based in Perth and operates depots in Hope Valley and Nangeenan, and it has made a commitment to using “the most efficient vehicles possible” to cut down on increased fuel costs at remote sites.

The new Volvo EV will be integrated into Marley’s wider fleet to service customers in transporting produce and delivering supplies to the region’s agricultural industry.

Owner of Marley’s Transport Frank Marley says the introduction of the new EV into the company’s fleet showcases its desire to remain at the forefront of heavy vehicle technology.

“My dad always said if you don’t stay at the front, you will get left behind,” Marley says. “For us, this truck signifies our commitment to leading from the front with sustainability and alternative fuels.”

More than 80 battery electric Volvo trucks have been delivered to Australia to date, with construction on the vehicles set to commence in Volvo Group Australia’s Wacol factory from as soon as 2028.

Volvo is currently targeting having 50 per cent of its global volume as either battery electric or hydrogen fuel cell electric trucks by 2030.

Volvo Trucks Australia Vice President of Sales and Marketing Tom Chapman says companies who embrace the new technology are providing themselves a strong platform for the future.

“Marley’s has a proud history of innovating to find efficiencies across their business,” Chapman says.

“I’m sure their pursuit of sustainable transport solutions and their embrace of emerging technology will serve them well into the future.”
