Truckmaker provides one less cylinder but more power

Hino has updated and adjusted engines on its 500 Series standard-cab medium truck range to improve fuel economy and meet Euro 5 emission standards.
Hino FC, FD and FE models have a new five-cylinder J07E engine, which delivers more power and torque and better fuel economy than the six-cylinder J08E engine it supersedes, the manufacturer says.
Product Strategy and Development Divisional Manager Alex Stewart says Hino’s entire 500 Series has undergone the transition to Euro 5 with relative ease.
“We can now offer cleaner trucks which deliver on fuel efficiency and low emissions,” Stewart adds.
“The standard-cab models have the new engine, while the wide-cab FG, GH and FM8J models have an improved version of the J08E engine.
“The improved Hino J08E delivers 16kW more power than its US04-rated predecessor.”
Improvements in the 500 Series engines include new engine control units, enhanced fuel mapping and effective variable-nozzle turbochargers which improve fuel economy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, Hino says.
Emission technology also includes using a cooled exhaust-gas recirculation system and a diesel oxidation catalyst with a particulate filter to break down various pollutants in the exhaust gases.
