Parking for heavy vehicles is set to be a key addition to NSW’s Kyeamba Gap rest areas, as both the northbound and southbound sites will receive upgrades as part of a $1.8 million funding package.
Located on the Hume Highway west of Canberra, both rest stops will be installed with new lighting and parking for heavy vehicles and include the upgrading of existing compost toilets to flushing toilets.
Works are set to commence on upgrading the northbound rest area this month and are expected to be finished by March, and will remain open with additional portable toilets to be installed.
Construction on the southbound rest area will start later this year and will be closed to all traffic while the upgrades are underway.
Work will be carried out on weekdays from 7am to 6pm and from 8am to 1pm on Saturdays.
“These upgrades will vastly improve the amenities available to motorists and truckies who travel along the Hume Highway with toilets now open, new lighting installed and more parking available,” Federal Assistant Minister for Regional Development Anthony Chisholm says.
“Driver fatigue is one of the top three contributors to fatal crashes on NSW roads, so these rest area upgrade investments we are making are designed to improve facilities to encourage the community to stop and rest,” NSW Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Jenny Aitchison says.
