Upgrade works on a 2.4-kilometre section of the Greater Western Highway between Bathurst and Lithgow is set to resume, with the work at Kirkconnell including a new asphalt road surface, drainage and kerb upgrades, new signage, safety barriers and line marking.
The work resumed on the section of road on Tuesday, January 28 with reduced speed limits, lane closures and intermittent stopping in place.
A number of safety upgrades were made to the site last year including improving lane shoulders and widths, and installing a dedicated right-turn bay for motorists turning from the Greater Western Highway into McManus Road.
Tree clearing along the side of the highway has also been complete to limit the prevalence of black ice on the road during the colder months.
A Transport for NSW spokesperson has thanked motorists for their patience during the intermittent works.
“Crews started working on this important safety upgrade last year and we’re pleased to now be in a position to have them return to complete the job,” the spokesperson says.
“We appreciate the patience of motorists who have had months of a reduced 80 km/h speed limit along this section of highway, but a return to 100 km/h is now just a few months away once work is completed.”
Work hours will be 7am to 5pm on weekdays with some night work required to complete the project, with a finish date of early May expected – weather permitting.
Motorists are advised to slow down as they approach the work zone, follow the advice of traffic control and allow up to 10 minutes of additional travel time between Bathurst and Lithgow.
