Detailed maps that outline the 19 highway upgrades that form the ‘Port to REZ’ project, which will pave the way from the Port of Newcastle to the Central-West Orana Renewable Energy Zone (REZ).
The $128.5 million project will involve 320 kilometres of road upgrades and ancillary works and enable the transportation of wind turbines and other components needed for the wind and solar farms, and the transmission network that connects them.
There are 19 identified ‘pinch point’ sections along the Golden Highway between the Port of Newcastle and Elong Elong, as well as a section of the Castlereagh Highway.

The Central-West Orana REZ is one of five renewable energy zones across New South Wales, with the other four locations consisting of Illawarra, Hunter-Central Coast, South West (between Darlington Point and Mildura) and New England.
The interactive map detailing the five locations and the upgrade points of the Port to REZ project is available here.
NSW Regional Transport and Roads Minister Jenny Aitchison says some of the Golden Highway sites in question could be reclassified as state roads as part of the works.
“Transport for NSW and EnergyCo are currently carrying out a review of roads across the designated renewable energy corridors to determine if any roads should be reclassified as state roads,” Aitchison says.
“Transport for NSW is supporting eight councils along the route with resources and information to help guide them in the rollout of the REZ in preparation for new wind and solar power operations.
“We are working closely with local councils and road authorities in their respective areas, responsible for the management of their local networks, including road safety, road funding, road maintenance and heavy vehicle access.”
