G-Series set to round out Scania range

Scania confirms its mid-size G-Series will be brought down under this year

January 15, 2010

With a revamped R-Series range already confirmed for Australia in 2010, Swedish truck manufacturer Scania says it will also bring its mid-size G-Series down under this year.

Powered by a 13-litre six-cylinder engine featuring Euro 5 compliance, EGR technology and Scania XPI or extra high pressure injection, the G-Series will offer operators a choice of 360hp, 400hp, 440hp and 480hp power ratings.

The torque rating varies between 1850Nm and 2500Nm depending on the power output.

In a boost to both driver comfort and fuel economy, G-Series buyers will have the option of choosing Scania’s Opticruise transmission, which is teamed with a 3.42:1 final drive.

The addition is especially useful for highway operators, while drivers will also find additional cab space when comparing the vehicle to Scania’s P-Series.

However, both series of vehicles will continue to share the same flat roof structure for interior height.

The G-Series will be available in either day cab, sleeper or highline configurations, with the sleeper and Highline scoring a 2000mm x 700mm Bonell wire sprung mattress and the option of a 600mm x 2000mm upper bunk.

The day cab can include driver rest options if required.

In line with Scania Australia’s Managing Director Roger McCarthy’s stated plan of pre-configuring trucks to suit the market, the G-Series will be offered in ready-to-work guises for a variety of industries.

Operators in the construction and municipal markets can request a pre-fitted twin-steer, full air suspension 8×4 configuration with a Hyva Hooklift already installed.

It is powered by the 440hp engine, features a day cab, new Scania Opticruise and Scania Retarder.

Other factory options include a tipper version with a 440hp engine specification, 6×4 chassis, day cab or sleeper cab, Scania Opticruise and Scania Retarder.

The G440 and G480 prime movers will be offered with 6×4 drive and either day or sleeper cab depending on requirements.

McCarthy says the G-Series offers the “perfect solution” for operators seeking a “premium mid-size European truck”.

“With the new, clean and frugal Scania XPI EGR Euro 5 13-litre engine, the G-series offers operators a wide range of power outputs from 360hp to 480hp, access to the new fully automated Scania Opticruise gear shift system, a comfortable, spacious cab with the option of a sleeper and the choice of rigid or prime mover configuration,” McCarthy says.

“The Scania G-series is powered by our highest horsepower Euro 5 inline engines and occupies an important position between the existing P- and R-series variants and it also features the bold, new Scania front-end styling recently revealed for the flagship R-series range – which will be launched in Australia during the early part of 2010.”

The first deliveries of G-Series models will begin in the first half of 2010.
