Ferguson launches Star Track’s hybrid brigade

Star Track Express adds 25 hybrid trucks to its fleet to cut emissions and fuel use by 30 percent

June 4, 2010

Star Track Express is making a big push to cut emissions and fuel use by adding 25 Fuso Canter Eco-Hybrids to its fleet.

Touted as Australia’s largest fleet of ‘green’ trucks, the operator claims the combination of a diesel and electric truck will use 30 percent less fuel in city driving and lead to a 30 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

Minister for Resources, Energy and Tourism Martin Ferguson officially launched the vehicles today.

Star Track Express CEO Derek Lightfoot says the vehicles make a real contribution to addressing climate change.

“These Star Track Express ‘green hybrids’ will make a difference and we hope that others in our industry follow our lead,” he says.

The Fuso trucks store energy from braking and feed it back into the battery system.

The electric motor is used to get the vehicle going, and the clutch switches to the diesel engine when the vehicle is cruising. Both motors work together when the driver needs to accelerate hard.
