FedEx offers sustainable shipping through new technology

The transport giant is working towards delivering a more sustainable shipping and freight market through the use of data solutions software

Freight company FedEx is looking towards sustainability in the shipping sector with its new software, FedEx Sustainability Insights (FSI).

FSI will give Australian customers access to their estimated emissions on international shipments within the FedEx network, allowing them to make the most sustainable decisions on their shipping routes.

FedEx Express president of the Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa region Kawal Preet says FSI aligns closely with FedEx’s plans for a sustainable future.

“Environmental stewardship and transparent sustainability reporting is now a universal business imperative,” Preet says.

At the same time, consumers also consider sustainability in their decision-making for e- commerce purchases.

“FedEx Sustainability Insights gives our customers direct access to emissions data they need to help them decide how to meet consumer expectations and drive their own business and sustainability efforts forward.”

FSI has been developed by FedEx Dataworks, using a cloud-based data engine to deliver near real-time network data to track and estimate a shipment’s CO2e emissions.

Customers will have access to emissions data for both short and long term goals. FSI shows estimated emissions data for specific tracking numbers and shipments and can also aggregate historical data for company accounts.

FedEx Express Australasia vice president Peter Langley says customers can expect support from FedEx into the future in maintaining these sustainable practices.

“Advancing environmental sustainability priorities is becoming increasingly important for our customers,” Langley says.

Going forward, we will be able to support them with direct access to emissions data to support their own carbon emission goals.

“With the help of FedEx Sustainability Insights, customers can better understand their shipping patterns and resulting environmental impact.”

FedEx is aiming to achieve carbon neutral operations by 2040. This is being done by electrifying the company’s fleet of pickup and delivery vehicles and investing in natural carbon capture.

The company announced this target in March 2021, pledging an initial investment of more than $2 billion towards developing sustainability within the company.

FedEx estimates it had introduced more than 460 electric vehicles into its delivery fleet by the middle of 2023.
