FedEx Express has introduced the first electric vehicles to its New Zealand fleet, with the 10 new LDV vehicles set to all be deployed in Auckland.
The move is the first of an impressive commitment by the company, which is striving to purchase exclusively zero tailpipe emission vehicles – like the new LDVs – by 2030.
The eDeliver 9s will be used in FedEx’s pickup and delivery operations within high-traffic areas of Auckland and can cover 200 kilometres on a full charge. EV charging stations have already been installed at FedEx facilities in Auckland, meaning the vans will be able to easily operate a full day’s route.
“Today marks an important moment in our operations in New Zealand,” Stephen Williams, Senior Manager of Operations at FedEx New Zealand says.
“By integrating EVs into our fleet, we are taking tangible steps to help reduce the impact of our operations on the environment while also steering the industry towards a more sustainable model of delivery and logistics.”
In addition to its goal of only purchasing zero-tailpipe emission vehicles for its parcel delivery and pickup fleet by 2030, FedEx is also striving to have all its parcel pickup and delivery vehicle be zero-tailpipe emissions models by 2040, meaning it is set to embark on a decade-long phase out of traditionally fuelled delivery vehicles.
