The federal government says it is backing the nations maritime sector and workers through its impending review of the Shipping Registration Act 1981 and Coastal Trading (Revitalising Australian Shipping) Act 2012.
Lynelle Briggs and Professor Nicholas Gaskell have been appointed to co-chair the reviews, which were committed to by the government as part of its response to the Strategic Fleet Taskforce report.
The reviews are aimed to ensure both acts reflect modern regulatory best practice for shipping registration and coastal trading which is cited as critical to support the long-term sustainability of the Australian maritime industry and strategic fleet.
Briggs recently led the review of the public sector board appointments in 2023 and previously held the role of Royal Commissioner on Aged Care Quality and Safety.
She has also previously been a board member of the Australian Maritime Safety Authority and Chairperson of the Maritime Super Board.
Gaskell is a maritime lawyer and is currently Emeritus Professor of maritime and commercial law at the University of Queensland.
They will report to the government on their findings in six months.
