Key highway safety upgrades in and around Brisbane are part of an overall $200 million transport project that aims to shift the way people and goods travel around one of Australia’s fastest-growing regions.
An added $20 million of funding has been announced for the Brisbane Valley Highway Safety Upgrades project, which has taken federal investment in the project to a total commitment of $40 million.
A further $78.5 million investment also takes federal government funding of the Moggill Road Corridor Upgrade project which will replace the Indooroopilly roundabout with an overpass over Moggill Road and upgrade key intersections.
$2.25 million has also been funded to investigate the cost and scope of works required for the Story Bridge.
In addition to the highway funding, $50 million has been attributed to the support of a business case to expand the city’s Metro to the northern suburbs on top of the initial $51.5 million investment.
Also included in the $200 million of additional funding is a range of active transport projects aimed, in part, at helping reduce congestion on Brisbane’s roads.
In total, the Australian government is now investing $28.9 billion in transport infrastructure projects across Queensland in the next decade.
“The Brisbane Valley Highway is a busy highway with a significant number of vehicles using it to travel in and out of Ipswich every day, and I have been strongly advocating for action to address safety concerns,” Federal Member for Blair Shayne Neumann says.
“This additional funding boost to what we have already delivered in our community will greatly improve safety and connectivity along what is the main artery between the Somerset region and South East Queensland.”
“Better roads and better transport are critical to keeping Brisbane moving and we need all three levels of government working together to achieve this,” Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner says.
“With the Australian Government’s support, we can now progress a rapid business case to progress the expansion of Brisbane Metro to Carseldine, Capalaba, Springwood and out to the airport.
“This funding will also help us progress a business case to ensure the Story Bridge continues to play a critical role in the national transport network for another 100 years.”
