Expect delays on the West Gate Freeway

Drivers are being warned to expect delays of up to 30 minutes on the West Gate Freeway until March as construction continues
West Gate Freeway expansion over the Williamstown Road intersection.

Works on Melbourne’s under-construction West Gate Tunnel project are set to ramp up today, with an expected extended period of good weather allowing crews to make serious headway in construction of the new arterial.

Starting from 9pm AEDT and continuing until mid-February, the works will see the West Gate Freeway reduced to three lanes in both directions between Williamstown Road and Millers Road.

During the same period there will also be ramp closures in place at the West Gate Freeway outbound exit ramps to Millers Road and Grieve Parade, with drivers who usually exit at these spots advised to now exit at Williamstown Road.

Lane and ramp closures will also be in effect between the West Gate Bridge and Millers Road until Saturday, March 8th, while the West Gate Freeway inbound will be reduced from four lanes to three lanes between Millers Road and Williamstown Road between Saturday, February 15th and Saturday, March 8th.

Delays of up to 30 minutes are to be expected during the works, which will deliver permanent road barriers, additional signage, smoother roads and new inbound express lanes.

“We thank drivers for their patience as we get on delivering vital works to open the West Gate Tunnel later this year,” Minister for Transport Infrastructure Gabrielle Williams says.

“The West Gate Tunnel Project will deliver a vital alternative to the West Gate Bridge providing a much-needed second river crossing when it opens by the end of 2025.”

The West Gate Tunnel is expected to remove up to 9000 trucks from local roads in Melbourne’s west.
