Mercedes-Benz is showcasing its range of Euro 6 compliant engines at the IAA truck show in Hanover, Germany, with engine displacements ranging from 7.7-litres to 12.8-litres.

The 16-litre inline six cylinder, to be derived from the Detroit Diesel DD16 engine developed in North America, was not included. Instead, Benz had the current Euro 5 specification V8, used in Australian-delivered Actros models.

The new engine range starts with the 7.7-litre OM 936 six cylinder unit, complete with twin overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder and crossflow head design for better cylinder breathing. It also employs variable exhaust valve timing.

To meet the strict requirements of Euro 6, to be introduced in Australia under ADR 80/04 regulations, the OM 936 uses exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and selective catalytic reduction (SCR). It has an AdBlue dosing unit, as well as a diesel particulate filter (DPF) to trap soot particles.

Power and torque figures for the OM 936 engine range between 175kW/1,000Nm and 260kW/1,400Nm.

Also on display at the show is the OM 470 engine, a 10.7-litre in-line six cylinder employing similar technologies as the OM 936, including four valves per cylinder, twin overhead camshafts and a crossflow cylinder head.

The OM 470 also uses Mercedes-Benz ‘X-PULSE’ fuel injection, an electronically controlled flexible common-rail system with hydraulic boosting capable of pressures of up to 2,100 bar.

Like the OM 936, the 470 engine uses EGR, SCR and a DPF to achieve the reduced emission allowances of Euro 6 regulations. Both engines also use six retaining studs per cylinder for increased torsional rigidity.

The OM 470 outputs run from 240kW/1700Nm and 315kW/2100Nm.

The new engines join the already available OM 471 12.8-litre engine that debuted the mix of EGR, SCR and DPF pollution controls at the launch of the new generation Actros in 2011.

Another in-line six cylinder unit, the OM 471 uses the same technologies as the OM 470, including the X-PULSE injection system for improved combustion control. It provides outputs from 310kW/2,100Nm and 375kW/2,500Nm.

The new engines will be offered in the Actros, including the small displacement OM 936, and the all-new Antos, which is also being debuted in Hanover.
