EU proposes fuel consumption reduction target and touts mandated field of vision to improve road safety
May 1, 2013
The European Union has taken steps toward mandating fuel efficiency and establishing aerodynamic guidelines for heavy vehicles.
A fuel consumption reduction target of 7-10 percent is being proposed by 2018-2020. The increase in fuel economy is also expected to bring about a significant reduction in vehicle emissions.
Aerodynamic gains are being touted as a way of increasing visibility from the driving compartment. A mandated field of vision is also being proposed as a way of improving safety for other road users.
Truck manufacturers MAN and Mercedes Benz have produced aerodynamic concept vehicles in recent years. Benz’s Actros-based concept was displayed at last year’s IAA show in Hanover and came closest to displaying real-world gains in efficiency.
The company claimed a proven fuel efficiency gain of 17 percent mainly due to diffusers fitted around the rear of the trailer and covered-in underside and wheels.
European Commission Vice President Siim Kallas says the trucks need to adopt a more aerodynamic shape.
“These changes will reduce hauliers’ fuel bills and give European manufacturers a head start in designing the truck of the future, a greener truck for the global market,” Kallas says.
The European Parliament and member states need to adopt the proposal before it becomes law but the new trucks are expected to be seen on roads by 2018-2020.
