Emissions trading scheme looms

The Federal Government has confirmed it will introduce an emissions trading scheme (ETS) and ditch the carbon tax.

The Government today confirmed the change, which is expected to cost several billion dollars, and has received mixed response from the public.

A floating price expected to be less than $10 a tonne will replace the fixed carbon price of about $24 a tonne.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd at the weekend told reporters in Cairns the change had to be budget-neutral.

But the change has been broadly criticized by members of the Greens and the Opposition.

Industry groups are reportedly waiting on more information about the proposal.
